Elf 4 Health, Week 1

Hey All! Sorry for the radio silence over here. I’ll be completely honest and say that I just haven’t felt up to blogging.

This past week was the start of the Elf4 Health program, created by Lindsay from The Lean Green Bean and Elle from Nutritionella. When you sign up for the program, you are matched up with a partner (or “elf”) and given challenges to complete for each day of the week. You have one partner for 2 weeks, and then you’re matched with someone new for the second 2 weeks. My partner Annie has been amazingly supportive and helpful throughout week 1.

Here’s a rundown of the first week’s challenges:

Monday: Meatless Monday

The challenge is self-explanatory. I started my day with an Ideal Protein Chocolate shake and a cup of coffee. Lunch was a big salad with robust italian dressing. Dinner was a bit more challenging, as my current diet really requires a meat product for dinner. My only vegetarian options are tofu and eggs, neither of which we had in the house. I was a little bit concerned until I read on the Elf 4 Health Facebook page that fish was allowed for the challenge, so I went with some broiled flounder with green and wax beans. Deliciously healthy!

Tuesday: Unsubscribe from at least 3 email lists and/or catalogs

This one sounds kind of dull, but it was actually one of my favorites this week. Through the Facebook page I found a website called Unroll.me. If you haven’t used this service before, it’s an absolute must! You just enter your email address and the website finds all of the email lists you’re subscribed to. Then you just click “unsubscribe” from all of the ones you don’t want anymore. You’ll be amazed at how much less junk you get in your email! I found over 250 subscriptions, and unsubscribed from 215 that I didn’t need. Unroll.me also allows you to group related lists together and get them all in one big email each day. How cool is that?!

Wednesday: Try a new workout today!

My original plan was to go to a new bootcamp class at the gym Wednesday morning. I had plans to meet my friend Bill in the city, and since Wednesday was the busiest travel day of the year, I opted out of class in favor of an earlier train. I didn’t get to do a new workout on Wednesday, and will be taking the class this Thursday after work to make up for it.

Thursday: Call someone you’re thankful for and tell them

I didn’t call anyone, because I knew everyone I would’ve called was busy preparing dinner and hosting guests. Instead, I made sure that everyone on that list got a text at some point during the day wishing them a Happy Thanksgiving. A few people even beat me to the punch (looking at you Sarah and Michael)!

Friday: Track your water intake

I’ve recently become a HUGE water drinker. I always have a water bottle, and am constantly filling it throughout the day. My record is 7 bottles in one workday, for a total of 165.9oz. On Friday I successfully drank half my body weight in ounces, for a total of 82 ounces. This is about what I try to shoot for on a daily basis. To get your number, divide your weight in half and drink that many ounces of water. So a 150 lb person would shoot to drink 75 ounces of water each day.

Saturday: Treat yourself to something you’ve been wanting

I went up to Troy on Saturday with my mom. We did a joint training session with James at Rezultz, visited my friend Louis at his flower shop The Enchanted Florist in Albany, and then headed into downtown Troy for some Small Business Saturday shopping. After we finished shopping we met up with my friends Jamie and Mike, Jamie’s father and her sister Laura for lunch at Spillin’ the Beans. This was one of my favorite cafes when I lived in Troy. They have excellent paninis, so I treated myself to “The Godfather”, which features hot sopressata, greens, tomato, balsamic drizzle, and mozzarella cheese, and is served with kettle chips. The diet I’m currently on allows very limited carbs, so sandwiches are often not an option. I decided to take a “cheat day” and have one, and I’m so glad I did.

Sunday: Complete 100 Burpees

This was a big challenge for me. I absolutely hate burpees. My form on them isn’t great, and they are harsh on my wrists and ankles. I was sore in the morning from Saturday’s workout, and I admittedly stalled until early afternoon. Around 1, I put on an episode of Psych on Netflix for entertainment and got started. I split them up into 10 sets of 10, with a 5 minute rest in between each set. This worked out beautifully. It made the process a lot more bearable for me, and I felt so accomplished when I was done!

Week one was a big success. I can’t wait to fill you in on Week 2! If you want to participate in the program, you can sign up now and be matched up for weeks 3 & 4 🙂

I hope everyone’s week is off to a good start. Happy Monday!

Where in the World?

Happy belated Halloween, and Happy Friday everyone! I hope everyone had a safe and fun evening last night. I personally stayed in and handed out candy to the neighborhood kids. The best costume I saw all night was a little girl, maybe 2 years old, dressed as a skunk. Her tail was bigger than her! I got a little help from my puppy Sasha, who dressed up as Eeyore and LOVED meeting all the neighborhood kids!

She could not stand the head piece, and kept shaking it off.

I dressed up during the day for work. My costume was originally going to be Miss Frizzle from “The Magic School Bus”. I bought all the materials last weekend, but ended up being sick all week long and just couldn’t motivate myself to work on it. Since I love to dress up for Halloween, I was determined to find a costume that was both simple and fun. I looked through a bunch of ideas online, and finally landed on this one:

2013-10-31 09.19.08Carmen Sandiego!

All this costume requires is a red trench coat, a fedora and a pair of black gloves. It’s super simple! I also got a chance to wear my brand new boots.

How did you celebrate Halloween this year? What are your favorite last-minute costume ideas?

Happy Weekend All!

Joe & Pat’s Restaurant

I spent the weekend on Staten Island to cheer on my friend Bill as he ran the SI Half Marathon Sunday morning. Bill wanted Italian food for dinner Saturday night, so we did a little research and came across the menu for Joe & Pat’s. The menu looked fabulous-especially since it included Bill’s favorite Italian dish, lasagna- and the prices were reasonable, so we grabbed a cab and headed out.

2013-10-12 19.36.33

We started off with some sweet potato fries, which were delicious. They were devoured before I could get a photo (sorry!).

2013-10-12 18.54.49

For my entree, I had gnocchi with fresh mozzarella and eggplant.

2013-10-12 18.55.05

Bill’s entree was-you guessed it-lasagna.

2013-10-12 19.18.48

I had a lovely glass of red wine with my meal, while Bill had this espresso coffee soda. I got to try a sip, and it tastes like sweetened iced coffee with a little carbonation. Coffee and bubbles, simply wonderful.

2013-10-12 19.14.26

For dessert we each had a cup of coffee and shared this very tasty slice of chocolate fudge cake. Om. Nom.

Overall, Joe & Pat’s was a deliciously pleasant experience. I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Staten Island.

I hope everyone’s week is off to a good start 🙂 Happy Tuesday!

‘Tude Shoot

I spent Sunday afternoon in the city with Bill catching up on some blogging and enjoying some yummy eats at French Roast. It was such a beautiful day outside I decided it was a good day for a mini photo shoot. I posed for a few smiley photos, none of which came out well. Little did I know that in the meantime Bill had taken a whole bunch of candid photos. In each one I have a sort of attitudinal but cute look on my face, which I really got a kick out of. I decided those were the photos I’d share with y’all today!

The only thing I’m wearing that’s new (or even a remotely recent purchase) are my sunnies, which are from Target,

and my Coach bangles, which were a gift from my mom.

This one kind of looks staged, but it’s completely candid!

I love this one the most. Total Miranda Priestly lip pursing going on here!

What did you do to enjoy the sunny weather this weekend? How ready are you for spring to arrive?

Happy Monday!

The Moment I Knew…

The moment I knew I liked you came about 30 minutes into our first chat on OkCupid. We were discussing reading and running, and basically anything but sex, which was a wildly refreshing change from all the sleaze-balls who’d messaged me in the weeks prior. It was nice to just sit and chat with no pressure to tell you “what I’d do to you if we were together right now”. Of course, that all came up later, but I already liked you then.

The moment I knew I wanted to meet you came about 2 weeks after we started chatting on OkCupid. I’d been putting off planning an actual face-to-face meeting with you, putting you on the back burner, and I’m not really sure why. I suppose it’s because I had so much fun talking to you, and I was afraid you’d be different in real life, like so many dates before you. I didn’t want to let go of the nice flow we had going. After a string of absolutely awful dates with guys with not-so-pure intentions, though, I was ready for someone different, and I decided it was worth the risk. So when I knew I had the apartment to myself for a weekend, I invited you over.

The moment I knew I wanted you to be mine came at about 11 PM the night of our first date. What an incredible day that was! I felt totally comfortable with you. We ordered pizza, and watched Mission Hill, which I hadn’t watched since I graduated from college. I was impressed that you’d come prepared for the night with more than just condoms, although that sentiment was much appreciated as well ;).

Then we decided to go snuggle up in my room and watch something online. You pulled up The Comedy Button’s “Alcoholocaust” episode on YouTube. There’s something to be said for a group of people who drink nasty beverages-both alcoholic and non-and eating shitty, expired snacks for the entertainment of their fans. And there’s definitely something to be said for a group of people who drink old Vietnamese alcohol that comes in a bottle that also houses a dead snake with a scorpion in its mouth. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed at something so hard in my entire life. It was the icing on top of an already incredible cake of a day. I slept better than I had in ages that night with you enveloping me, and I was sad to bring you to the train station the following morning. Two weeks later you asked me to be your’s, and I didn’t come down off the high for about a month.

The moment I knew for certain-as if I had any doubt to begin with-that you were a keeper came a little over 2 months into our relationship, on my birthday. We’ll try to avoid too much of the nitty-gritty depressing details, because we all know what went down that day, but you were amazing. When my mom called as we were walking out the door to start celebrating the day, you immediately wrapped me up in your loving arms and just let me cry. You kept me distracted all the way to the hospital so I could drive.

The greatest thing for me, though, was when we walked into the room. My entire immediate family was there, surrounding my father, who was laying there with unseeing eyes and more tubes than the New New York transit system. It must have been the most uncomfortable moment possible for you, but instead of putting your head in your shell and shying away from it, you immediately took me into your arms and spent the rest of the day making sure I was okay. You must have been dying from discomfort, but I never once felt like I needed to comfort you. I knew in that moment I could count on you to be there for me at my best and at my worst.

Each passing day brings about a new reason to be certain I want you around for a very long time (would you like to stay forever?). I’ve waited a long time (my entire life!) and kissed a lot of frogs to get here, but I can’t imagine life without you.

Hello!

Hello Fashionistas!

Sorry for being so sporadic with posting lately. Things have been a little more than busy, mostly in a good way. I haven’t had a spare second to take photos, in spite of getting a new tripod for Christmas, or think about much of anything besides what I was doing right in that moment. More on that later this week!

I did, however, post my very first guest post for Nikki at nb.Adore Style! I made a fun and interactive tutorial on how to make mini bow earrings. They’re one of my favorite crafts to make, so check out the tuturial and try them out for yourself. They’re also available for sale on my Etsy Store.

I hope everyone’s new year is off to a good start. I rang in the new year with Bill and his sister in NYC, which was a total blast! I wish I had taken a few photos, but I was far too busy enjoying myself to take any, hehe.

How did you ring in the  new year?

Oh Christmas Tree!

Our very first Christmas tree!

Jamie looking pretty as ever!

Sorry for the darkness of these photos, folks. I wanted to get the full effect of the tree in each photo.

Did anyone notice that Jamie and I dressed alike today with black and red outfits? We didn’t even plan that, haha!

Happy Tuesday everyone! Only 14 more shopping days until Christmas (and I haven’t even started yet…YIKES!)!

Stylish Monkey

I heard about this on the radio this morning on my way into the office, and I just HAD to share it with you guys!

If you haven’t seen this story yet, a monkey wearing a little sheepskin coat was seen wandering around an IKEA parking lot in Toronto yesterday afternoon. He had gotten out of his crate in the car while his owner was inside the store shopping. He has since been returned safely to his owner.

coatmonkey
How stinkin’ cute is this little guy?

Kind of makes you want to go out and get a pet monkey so you can dress him up in a little coat, doesn’t it?

I hope everyone had a great weekend and is having a good start to the week. Be on the lookout for some fun posts this week, including a spotlight on costume designer Jany Temime!

Friday Letters

One of my favorite bloggers, Mikell at Love & Such, does a feature every week called “Friday Letters” where she writes little notes to people/things that have made a difference in her life. Since I’ve been sick all week and have NO outfit pics to share with you, I’m going to be a total copy-cat today and do a Friday Letters post! Here we go:

Dear Bill, Thank you for being the most amazing boyfriend a girl could ask for. I could not even begin to thank you for the things you’ve done for me in the short time we’ve been together. I feel so lucky to have you in my life and I can’t wait to have more adentures with you :-*

Dear Sasha, You get the cutest puppy EVER award! Even when you’re eating ornaments off of the office Christmas tree, you have the uncanny ability to make me smile. I mean, how can you NOT smile looking at a face like that?
